Expired car insurance - what do you risk if you drive like that?

You pay the insurance every month, although it doesn’t seem to help you with anything. If you have never been involved in an accident, or you are a new driver, paying the insurance can be frustrating, because at first glance it seems that you do not receive anything in return. The reality is, however, completely different, because having a valid insurance can save you a lot of hassle, as we will see below.

In some countries , about a quarter of cars drive without valid MTPL insurance. Some of them have foreign numbers and their insurance has expired, other drivers avoid concluding the policy due to high prices, others make policies for a very short period (for example a month) and then forget to renew it.

Of course, none of these reasons stand when the policeman stops you t and you don’t have a valid car insurance.

Drivers have the obligation to have insurance, even if they do not use the car. According to the law, natural or legal persons who own vehicles subject to registration or registration in Europe have the obligation to insure themselves for cases of civil liability as a result of damages caused by accidents.

Drivers who own registered and functional cars must have RCA insurance even if they no longer drive them. Which means that the only cars for which there is no obligation of an insurance policy are those that have been removed from circulation. In this situation, drivers can also choose to suspend the insurance, in which case they are obliged to hand over the registration plates to the police. Basically, if the owner of a car does not deregister the vehicle from circulation, he is obliged to have insurance, regardless of whether the car is still used or not.

What can happen if you drive without insurance?

The possible scenarios in case of an expired or non-existent insurance are not positive at all, as we will see below. First of all, let’s talk about sanctions.

Thus, if you do not have a valid insurance, you can receive a fine which differs based on the country you live in but usually it is quite high ,or you can be left without the registration certificate / registration plates.

Moreover, if more than 90 days passed from the date you were stopped by the police and you still haven’t renewed your insurance the registration of the vehicle can be suspended ex officio. And, if you do not prove the RCA payment within 30 days from the date you were caught by the police, you will wake up with the car removed from circulation.

Another set of consequences is related to the unfortunate case of a traffic accident, in which case you are good to pay. If the accident is your fault, you will bear the consequences.

If someone else hits you, you will pay for the damages anyway, even if it’s not your fault. That’s because you are not allowed to drive on public roads without a valid insurance. And, considering how expensive a car’s repairs can be, you should think twice before setting off without an insurance in your glovebox.
