What is the role of the EGR and why do many cancel it?

In the hope of reducing carbon dioxide emissions, since 2007 all newly manufactured diesel cars have come equipped with an egr valve.

This valve reduces emissions but after many studies it has been shown that it also reduces engine efficiency by 3%, which means that the engine consumes 3% more diesel to provide the same performance.

Virtually any car with an EGR valve consumes 3% more diesel, so carbon dioxide emissions will increase by 3%.

What is the principle of operation of the EGR valve?

The valve recirculates some of the exhaust gas, it takes in a small amount of flue gas and sends it to the intake manifold where the outside air mixes with the exhaust gas before it reaches the cylinders. Engineers claim that this way the car pollutes less, but in fact this affects the engine itself.

The first negative thing is higher consumption. Air mixed with flue gases burns more inefficiently than air with more oxygen, incorrect combustion leads to more fuel consumption.

A second negative aspect is the fact that the unburned gases bring with them carbon that over time is deposited inside the engine and the intake manifold.

These deposits will decrease the car’s performance over time but can also generate high repair costs if a valve becomes blocked due to excessive carbon deposits.

The EGR valve only redirects the flue gases and does not clean them through an air filter, so deposits are guaranteed over time.

Third, the gases leave the cylinder at a temperature of over 700 degrees Celsius. The recirculation system needs a radiator to cool them before re-entering the engine. If this cooling system fails, the engine will follow suit in less than a minute.

Does your engine need EGR?

The answer is no, it was introduced to comply with global regulations. If you decide to cancel the EGR there is a good chance that you will not pass the ITP inspection, so think ahead.

How hard is it to cancel the EGR?

The internet is full of guys who can do this, but keep in mind that it is somewhat “illegal” to do this. They will mount a board inside the EGR to block gas access and update the software to tell the engine that the EGR valve is no longer present.

Your car will consume less and will work more correctly, the engine will run at much lower temperatures. If you do not want to cancel the EGR you must consider checking and cleaning the valve more often.
