Summary
  • Drivers often overlook motorcyclists; inattentiveness causes most crashes.
  • Motorcycles are more vulnerable due to narrow profiles and lack of protection.
  • Be extra cautious in warm months; watch intersections and motorcycle traffic.
  • Check blind spots every time; motorcycles may brake differently; keep safe distance.

For many motorcyclists, nothing is more thrilling than riding on open roads. However, with that enthusiasm come many safety risks. As drivers, it is our responsibility not only to share the road with motorcyclists but also to take proactive measures to enhance their safety on the road.

In Romania, attention paid to motorcyclists by drivers is significantly lower than in other European countries. Statistics show that inattentive drivers cause most motorcycle accidents, and many car drivers do not even bother looking for motorcycles or bicycles before performing maneuvers.

Specific Risks for Motorcyclists in Traffic

Motorcyclists face unique challenges on the road that make them far more vulnerable than car drivers. The narrow profile of a motorcycle, the absence of a protective bodywork, and the reduced stability compared with a passenger car contribute to this higher risk.

Besides being aware that a motorcyclist may be near your vehicle, here are four essential tips to remember when sharing the road with motorcyclists.

1. Be mindful of motorcyclists during the warmer months

As we know, motorcyclists do not ride on the open road during the colder months due to unfavorable weather conditions and a higher risk of accidents. The warmer months are when most motorcyclists hit the road, so from April through November we should be aware of their presence in traffic.

Tips for the warm season:

  • Check more carefully before changing lanes
  • Be aware that the number of motorcycles grows significantly
  • Anticipate the behavior of motorcyclists resuming riding after the winter break

Increased vigilance at intersections

Intersections are the most dangerous points on the road for car drivers and also present the greatest risks for motorcyclists. With this in mind, you should observe all traffic rules at intersections and understand that motorcyclists can thread between vehicles, often occupying your vehicle’s blind spot.

2. Double-check your blind spots

Failing to check blind spots is probably the main cause of crashes between motorcycles and other vehicles. Given the small size of motorcycles, they can be difficult for drivers to spot when changing lanes.

Efficient blind-spot checking technique:

  • Use the side mirrors and the center mirror
  • Turn your head to physically check the blind spot
  • Give yourself extra time to assess traffic
  • Be especially careful in conditions of reduced visibility

Taking these aspects into account, you should stay aware and check your blind spots every time, especially when you observe motorcycles nearby.

3. Don’t get too close — respect a safe following distance

Preferably, give motorcyclists plenty of space on the road, especially when you are approaching them from behind. This gives you enough time to react if something unexpected happens.

Motorcyclists’ braking characteristics

A motorcyclist may not brake immediately when slowing down, as they may use engine braking or slow down by other means. Do not assume you will always see brake lights. Hitting a motorcyclist from behind can seriously endanger the rider, especially if you are driving a heavy vehicle.

Safe overtaking

It would help to be very careful when overtaking a motorcycle:

  • Passing a motorcyclist at high speeds can create a strong gust of wind
  • This gust can destabilize the rider or push them off the road
  • Always signal to alert a motorcyclist that you intend to pass
  • Maintain a safe distance before returning to your lane

4. Stay in your own lane

Motorcycles have the legal right to occupy a full lane and have equal rights on the road with other vehicles. This rule is fundamental and there are no exceptions.

Why sharing a lane is not allowed

Under no circumstances should you drive your car in the same lane as a motorcycle, side by side. No matter how small your vehicle is or how much extra space it seems to have, never turn to share a single lane with a motorcycle.

This is not only illegal under the Traffic Code but also increases the risk of a serious crash.

Drivers’ Responsibility in Traffic

Clearly, motorcyclists face significant challenges in traffic, and their safety level is much lower than that of a car. It is the duty of every driver to be attentive and to demonstrate a defensive driving style.

Impact of motorcycle accidents:

  • An accident involving a motorcycle can result in substantial damage for both parties involved
  • The consequences for the rider can be devastating due to the lack of protection
  • The legal and moral responsibility of the car driver is very high

By following these simple yet crucial tips, we contribute to a safer road environment for all road users and demonstrate respect for the life and safety of motorcyclists.
