What are the signs that you need to change the timing belt?

As drivers we have to know some technical aspects related to the car we drive, otherwise we risk destroying it by simply not caring.

The same goes for the timing belt, which you’ve probably heard of, maybe you even know exactly where it’s located, but do you know what its role is? Do you know the main signs it shows when it is about to break down?

If the answer is no, no worries, in today’s article we have prepared some technical details about the distribution and a list of the main signs that should make you think of calling a mechanic as soon as possible.

What is the distribution and timing belt?

The distribution is that part of the engine whose main role is to keep in sync the elements responsible for intake, exhaust and even the position of the pistons in the cylinders. In short, it deals with the combustion times of the engine.

As elements that constitute the distribution system we can mention the toothed drive belt, the water pump (not for all cars), the guide roller and the tensioning one. On some car models, instead of the classic timing belt, you will find a timing chain.

The timing belt is one of these components of the timing system and its main purpose is to keep the upper and lower part of the engine synchronous (vibrochen, camshaft).

Usually the materials used to build a belt are synthetic, but of high durability, to withstand constant wear.

But like any other material and consumer good, the timing belt becomes worn over time and can no longer cope with everyday use.

You should always keep an eye on the condition of this belt, because it is one of those components of your car that works the hardest during a long drive, so you never know its exact condition until you check.

What are the main signs that tell you that something is wrong with the timing belt?

1. The engine is no longer working properly

When the timing belt becomes too worn, a slip may occur and it may jump over a few teeth. Thus, that synchronization he deals with, almost disappears.

The valves that have the role of inlet and outlet will start operating with small delays. Also, problems with the timing belt can affect other neighboring elements and you may wake up with a dusty car even while driving.

It can also slowly destroy the cylinder heads. There is no problem if you do not have the experience or technical knowledge necessary to deal with solving the problem yourself, but you must definitely turn to a mechanic.

2. The engine does not start at all

This is the saddest case, which signals that the belt has probably already broken and you hear a weary engine trying hard to start, but without success.

If you notice or feel that the belt has broken while driving, you must stop the engine and probably call for a tow truck.

3. You hear an unusual sound from the engine

In this case it means that the engine is not lubricated properly and the sound you hear comes from the cleats. The timing belt has the role of keeping the crankshaft functional, and in case of belt problems, the sound you will hear comes from inside the engine.

You will hear the same type of sound if the engine lacks oil pressure. If you hear any unusual sound coming from the engine, call the mechanic.

4. Notice oil leaks

If you notice oil leaks from the front of the car, from the engine to be exact, consider this a sign that you need to check the timing belt.

5. The engine indicator light comes on

For more modern cars, a good way to find out when something is wrong with your car is to simply turn on the on-board indicator light.

But the engine warning light can signal various problems, so you will need to check with a mechanic exactly to know for sure.

Self-timing belt replacement methods

Normally, we do not recommend to someone who does not have technical knowledge in the field to start changing the timing belt alone.

Firstly, because it is an expensive process (so if you keep giving the money, at least it should be done like the world) and secondly, because it is a difficult process.

The third aspect would be that using a specialized service, they are equipped with several modern devices that can accurately measure the tension of the belt and adjust it as needed, thus ensuring that the new belt is perfect.

But, if you still want to start on your own, you can find below the steps we recommend:

Before you actually start working, you must make sure that the negative end of the battery cable is disconnected.

Then remove the accessory belt and the rest of the elements that stand in your way to reach the timing belt.

Depending on the model of your car, you may need to remove the servo part, the air conditioning compressor and the valve cover assembly. Also on the preparation side of the car you may need to disassemble the engine buffer and the engine mount, lift the car on the jack and remove the front wheel on the right side.

Removing

At the actual disassembly part, start by removing the pulley with shock absorbers for vibrochen. The main purpose of the pulley is to engage the water pump.

Once you have got rid of the pulley, remove the housings that protect the components of the distribution system (this part is not heavy, the housings being made of plastic).

You have to be careful to align the motor exactly to the special signs and then, with a key, open the tensioner. Now you actually have access to the timing belt and you are going to remove its rollers.

Check the water pump to see exactly what condition it is in (but if you change the belt, it would be advisable to change the pump as well).

Remove the antifreeze, put in the new pump and fill in with new antifreeze. Before mounting the new parts, it is advisable to clean the actual distribution system.

Reassembly

The final stage involves reassembling all components. After reassembling the elements, put the battery back and check if the car works according to plan.

Don’t expect the process to be short or easy. Especially when it comes to mounting certain elements exactly according to specifications.

Once again we mention that we recommend trying this process only to people who have some experience with mechanical repairs.
