Tips for Makes and Models

ESP light on the dashboard of an Fiat Fullback?

How safe are the cars we drive? I don’t think we can find the exact answer to this question because the level of safety offered depends greatly on the context we’re in, as well as other factors (the driver’s style and experience, the car’s equipment). However, what we do know is that cars produced in recent years come factory-equipped with systems designed to continuously enhance safety, both through prevention and protection in case of accidents.

The most well-known safety system in a car is the ABS, which is part of the braking system. Another essential system for better control over the car is the ESP, which shares the same sensors as the ABS and has the same purpose: ensuring easier maneuverability. In the following, we’ll explain more precisely how the car’s ESP helps you and what specialists recommend for drivers who have cars equipped with ESP.

Important to Know About the ESP System in the Fiat Fullback

ESP stands for Electronic Stability Program. Practically, it’s the electronic control system responsible for maintaining the car’s stability before and during skidding. With the help of this system, drivers manage to control the car more efficiently in difficult situations such as slipping, skidding, or encountering obstacles.

The ESP system has been tested countless times and has shown how effective it can be in challenging road conditions. However, it doesn’t absolve drivers from taking responsibility in traffic and practicing defensive and preventive driving.

As mentioned earlier, this article is especially addressed to those who have cars with ESP. Considering that ESP is currently a standard feature in all new cars, chances are high that you’re among those who should understand how it helps in practical terms.

3 Common Situations Where ESP in the Fiat Fullback Is a Great Help

Cars with ESP are easier to stabilize when driving in difficult conditions—during winter, in rain, on very bumpy roads, or when you encounter obstacles that you need to avoid suddenly. Let’s take a closer look at how ESP acts in these conditions!

Avoiding Unforeseen Obstacles. You know that when an unexpected obstacle appears in front of you and you swerve sharply to avoid it, it’s very possible for the car to become unstable, skid, and you might lose control. To prevent these possible scenarios, the ESP system acts by controlling, through braking, the wheels over which you no longer have control—a frequent situation for rear-wheel-drive cars.

Safety in Difficult Weather Conditions. ESP is a real help during the cold season, especially when you have to drive on roads covered with snow or ice, but also during rainy periods. However, it’s important to realize that no safety system—including ESP—is helpful if you don’t adjust your speed and have a properly equipped car for wet, icy, or snow-covered roads.

Losing Control of the Car. When you make quick maneuvers and are about to lose control of the car because it logically becomes unstable, ESP contributes to better maneuverability and, obviously, firmer control. As in the previous situation, ESP is not an infallible system but a complement to other conditions you must fulfill—practicing preventive driving and having a fully equipped car for the road.

ESP Warning Light Illuminated on the Dashboard in the Fiat Fullback—Possible Causes

The ESP has a dashboard indicator—a yellow warning light that alerts you when the car becomes unstable or when something isn’t functioning correctly and affects the system. In general, you may see the ESP warning light continuously illuminated on the dashboard of your Fiat Fullback if:

  • There are malfunctions in the speed sensors or angle sensors. When these sensors are faulty, the ESP system will automatically be suspected of incorrect functioning, and the dashboard warning light will illuminate to notify you that you need to visit a service center to check the car’s technical condition.

  • There are software errors. No software is infallible. Errors occur quite often, especially in cases of incorrect reprogramming or reflashing, and can cause the ESP warning light to remain lit on the dashboard.

  • There’s a malfunction in the steering column. The steering column is part of the power steering system and ensures easier maneuverability of the steering wheel. Although it’s not directly connected to the ESP, when the column is faulty and the steering wheel can no longer be easily maneuvered, this situation is detected by the ESP warning light on the dashboard.

  • There’s heavy handling or noticeable instability caused by road conditions. In this case, the ESP doesn’t signal a malfunction but indicates that the system can no longer fulfill its role of ensuring stability. To return to a state where the ESP has full control, you can reduce your speed until you reach the safety level imposed by the system.

How to Stop or Deactivate the ESP in the Fiat Fullback

Before finding out how to deactivate the ESP system, we’ll give you some situations where you might need to do this. There are cases where the assistance of the ESP can hinder you. For example, if you’re stuck in snow or mud, you need the wheels to spin faster—not be blocked—to get out of that situation. Also, if you have a passion for sporty driving and usually do so safely for yourself and others, you might prefer how the car feels without ESP.

In such situations where you want to temporarily deactivate the ESP, you need to press the ESP button located next to the gear shift. The dashboard indicator will immediately notify you that there’s been a change in the system.

The ESP indicator on the dashboard lights up when you deactivate the system, as mentioned earlier. In this situation, it illuminates and remains lit on the dashboard until you reactivate the ESP. If the ESP is functioning normally, the dashboard warning light should not be illuminated. It will light up and turn off quickly (intermittently) only when the system activates (the car skids, slips, makes a sudden turn, etc.).

How to Clear the ESP Warning Light Remaining Illuminated on the Dashboard in the Fiat Fullback

If the warning light is illuminated on the dashboard, it means you’re facing one of the situations we’ve detailed: you’ve deactivated the ESP on your Fiat Fullback and know what to do, or there’s a possible malfunction, and it’s recommended that you take the car to a service center for inspection and repair.

The ESP system is essential for good control over the car in difficult situations, as you could see in the examples in this article. That’s why we do not recommend requesting the erasure of the illuminated ESP indicator on the dashboard without a complete and correct inspection of the car. Although there may be exceptions where the warning light doesn’t signal serious malfunctions, it’s safer to prevent unpleasant situations when it comes to cars, just as in many other cases.
