What to do when the oil light comes on?

Here you are driving with no worries and suddenly you notice that the warning light related to the oil system, has just lit up. You are on your way to work and you do not want to be late, but you wonder what you should do and how serious the situation is.

Many modern vehicles have two warning lights on board related to the oil system. The first is a sign that it’s time to change the oil. This light is made to light up after a certain period of time after changing the oil or after you have exceeded a certain number of kilometers driven.

The second light has been used for a long time and requires a lot of attention. It indicates a low level of oil pressure. When your vehicle’s oil pressure drops, it can cause engine damage. The light may be represented by a picture of an oil can or the word “OIL”.

If you follow the steps listed here, you can prevent damages and protect your car.

Check the oil level

You need to take this warning light seriously and stop the car as fast as you can.

Step 1: Park in a safe place. Find a parking lot or a portion of road where you can stop.

If you are on the road, you can stop on the emergency lane and turn on the emergency lights.

Step 2: Stop the engine. This way, you can check the oil level safely.

Step 3: Open the hood and locate the oil dipstick. Usually, it is a yellow handle, which you take out; the handle may have the word “OIL” written on it or an oil can drawn.

Step 4: Remove the dipstick. Remove the dipstick and wipe it with a clean cloth.

Step 5: Put the dipstick back. Replace the dipstick and remove it again.

Step 6: Find out the oil level. Check the signs to see where you can see the oil level

Step 7: Add oil if necessary. Add oil if the level is below the line that shows if you need to put oil or that shows a low oil level.

When it’s okay to drive

Once you have checked the oil, you must decide if you want to continue driving or if you need further help.

Under certain conditions, you can drive with no problem before consulting a mechanic. If the engine makes noise when you start it , then it is clearly not okay to drive and you need a helping hand.

Step 1: Check for noise. If you have added oil and the dipstick shows an adequate level of oil and the light is off, you can drive the car if the engine does not make noise.

Sometimes you may not be at all safe to drive. If the dipstick does not show any oil, it is not advisable to drive, even if you add oil and the engine still makes noise.

Tip: Do not drive if the oil system warning light does not turn off after adding oil. A certain component of the oil system may be faulty even if you have enough oil. Driving in this condition can cause engine damage.
